THE BEST FOUNDATION WILL HOST 2016 NATIONAL TOURNAMENT IN SOFIA
The BEST Foundation will host its 2016 National Tournament on 22-24 April at Thomas Jefferson Second English Language School and Sofia University. Capping off a year of six regional tournaments in six different cities as well as the U.S. Qualifier in Blagoevgrad, the National Tournament will bring over 400 students, judges, and volunteers together in Sofia for a weekend of English-language speech and debate.
This tournament will be one of the largest high school academic competitions in Bulgaria, and certainly the only one of its kind, says BEST Managing Director Anna Fuselier. “We give English language learners the opportunity to develop their public speaking, performance, and critical thinking skills in a language-immersive environment. There’s really nothing else like BEST in Bulgaria.” Students from grades eight to twelve will compete in events like Original Oratory, World Schools Debate, Prose and Poetry Interpretation, and Duo, all in English.
According to Fuselier, “It’s been a very active year for BEST. This is our first year hosting regional tournaments, and after six of these tournaments in three regions, we are excited to have teams from all three regions together in one city again. The level of competition will be very high.”
On Friday and Saturday, the tournament will be held in Thomas Jefferson Second English Language School. It will conclude on Sunday with the finals and closing ceremony held in Sofia University. Distinguished guests will include the Vice Minister of Education and Science Diyan Stamatov, American University in Bulgaria President Stratsi Kulinski, Chief Executive Officer of Teach for Bulgaria Evgenia Peeva, and Program Officers at the Bulgarian Fulbright Commission Iliana Dimitrova and Rada Kaneva.
