Agricultural University – Plovdiv to Host 2018 Speech and Debate National Tournament
On 27-29 April 2018, The Agricultural University – Plovdiv will host BEST Foundation’s annual National tournament – a first time for the university. Students will compete in five events: English-language debate, poetry and prose performance, duo interpretation, and original oratory.
The Plovdiv tournament will be BEST’s 27th tournament and the 6th and final for the 2017-2018 school year. The tournament is open to English-language speech and debate teams all across the country. BEST expects to host over 500 people in Plovdiv, including over 400 student competitors, making it BEST’s largest tournament this season. The tournament will also feature official guests from the Bulgarian-American Fulbright Commission, the US Embassy, Teach for Bulgaria/Заедно в час, and representatives of the Agricultural University – Plovdiv.
The tournament will be the last of the 2017-2018 school year and the largest BEST tournament in the organization’s history. Previous regional tournaments were held in Pleven, Sliven, Sofia, and Dobrich, and BEST and the American University in Bulgaria hosted the first-ever Balkan Voices international oratory tournament in March 2018. This tournament season also marks the first year that BEST tournaments have been included on the Ministry of Education’s National Calendar for Extracurricular Activities for High School Students.
About The BEST Foundation
BEST stands for Bulgarian English Speech and Debate Tournaments. Established in 2013, BEST provides the English-language learners of Bulgaria an opportunity to come together and pursue personal growth through English language speech and debate. BEST aims to empower students to think critically, express themselves creatively, and create a dynamic community that truly cares about the success and the future of Bulgaria. We provide a platform for English-language speech and debate domestically and send Bulgarian students abroad to compete internationally.
