BEST National Tournament at Agrarian University, Plovdiv – April 27-29, 2018

From 27-29 April, the BEST Foundation hosted its sixth and final tournament of the 2017-2018 school year. 410 high school students attended the English-language speech and debate event at the Agricultural University – Plovdiv, the school’s first time hosting a BEST tournament. 38 teams from 25 Bulgarian cities attended the tournament. Students competed in five events: Original Oratory, Duo Interpretation, Prose Interpretation, Poetry Interpretation, and World Schools Debate.

BEST is especially grateful to Trayan Trayanov and Ivan Petrov of Teach for Bulgaria; Ivan Dimov of Single Step; Krasse Gueorguiev; Angela Rodel, Iliana Dimitrova, and Rada Kaneva of the Bulgarian-American Fulbright Commission; and Sonya Yordanova from Kinstellar Bulgaria. We also thank Prof. Dr. Hristina Yancheva, Doc. Dr. Svetla Yancheva, and Mr. Velichko Rodopski from the Agricultural University – Plovdiv for being such gracious hosts for this tournament. The BEST Foundation previously held four regional tournaments throughout the 2017-2018 school year in Pleven, Sliven, Sofia, and Dobrich, as well as the first-ever international oratory tournament at the American University in Bulgaria in Blagoevgrad. BEST will begin its 2018-2019 tournament season in Fall 2018.

BEST Balkan Voices Tournament at AUBG, Blagoevgrad – March 31-April 1, 2018

On March 31st-April 1st, the BEST Foundation and the American University in Bulgaria hosted Bulgaria’s first-ever international oratory tournament, Balkan Voices. 39 students competed in the Original Oratory event, where they presented a 10-minute self-authored speech raising awareness and calling for action on an issue of concern.

Coaches and chaperones from around Bulgaria joined their students on AUBG’s beautiful campus, and we were pleased to have several AUBG students and staff, BEST alumni, and other community members as volunteer judges for the tournament. The tournament also featured several students new to BEST, from Sofia, Yakoruda, Svilengrad, Dobrich, Polski Trambesh, and National College I.L.Caragiale in Bucharest, Romania.

BEST would like to thank Boriana Shalyavska, Stefan Novoselski, and the entire AUBG Admissions team; Professor Anna Jouviskaia and AUBG alumnus Andrey Anastassov; the cast and crew of the AUBG musical Spring Awakening; and former Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev.

Balkan Voices was BEST’s 5th tournament of the 2017-2018 school year. Previous regional tournaments were held in Pleven, Sliven, Sofia, and Dobrich. BEST will hold its National Tournament in Plovdiv on 27-29th April 2018.

BEST Regional Tournament at Geo Milev FLHS, Dobrich – March 10-11, 2018

On 10 & 11 March, the BEST Foundation hosted its fourth tournament of the 2017-2018 school year in Dobrich. 239 high school students attended the English-language speech and debate event at Geo Milev Foreign Language High School, the school’s first time hosting a BEST tournament. 19 teams from 14 Bulgarian cities attended the tournament. Students competed in five events: Original Oratory, Duo Interpretation, Prose Interpretation, Poetry Interpretation, and World Schools Debate.

BEST is especially grateful to the principal of Geo Milev FLHS Milena Ivanova, principal Angela Pancheva of Stefan Karadzha School, and Mr. Yordan Yordanov, mayor of Dobrich. BEST would also like to thank all of our coaches, judges, chaperones, Student Ambassadors, and student volunteers from the host school for helping our tournament run smoothly, as well as the Bulgarian Debate Association for providing us with Chief Adjudicators for our Debate category.

This was the BEST Foundation’s final regional tournament of the year, but they will also host Bulgaria’s first international oratory tournament, in conjunction with the American University in Bulgaria, from 31 March – 1 April. BEST’s National tournament will be held at the Agricultural University in Plovdiv on 28-29 April.

BEST Regional Tournament at Akad. Mihail Arnaudov 119th School, Sofia – February 17-18, 2018

On 17 & 18 February, the BEST Foundation hosted its third tournament of the 2017-2018 school year in Sofia. 339 high school students attended the English-language speech and debate event at Akad. Mihail Arnaudov, the school’s first time hosting a BEST tournament. 27 teams from 18 Bulgarian cities attended the tournament. Students competed in five events: Original Oratory, Duo Interpretation, Prose Interpretation, Poetry Interpretation, and World Schools Debate.

BEST is especially grateful to Director Diyan Stamatov and Deputy Directors Irina Filipova and Simeon Angelov of 119th School, and to the Bulgarian-American Fulbright Commission and the US Embassy for their ongoing support. The BEST Foundation will host three additional tournaments during this school year. The next regional tournament will take place in Dobrich on 10 & 11 March, targeting schools in Eastern Bulgaria. BEST will also host Bulgaria’s first international oratory tournament, in conjunction with the American University in Bulgaria, from 31 March – 1 April. The National tournament will be held in Plovdiv on 28-29 April.

BEST Regional Tournament at Zahariy Stoyanov WLHS, Sliven – December 9-10, 2017

On 9 & 10 December, the BEST Foundation hosted its second tournament of the 2017-2018 school year in Sliven. 290 high school students attended the English-language speech and debate event at Zahariy Stoyanov FLHS, the school’s first time hosting a BEST Tournament. 26 teams from 19 Bulgarian cities attended the tournament, including first-time teams from Kardzhali, Svishtov, Razgrad, Targovishte, and Varna. Students competed in five events: Original Oratory, Duo Interpretation, Prose Interpretation, Poetry Interpretation, and World Schools Debate.

On Saturday morning, the event began with a lively opening ceremony organized by the host school, with student performances of dance, music, and poetry. Special guests throughout the weekend included members of the Bulgarian Debate Association, Single Step founder Ivan Dimov, journalist Gena Traykova, and Rada Kaneva from the Bulgarian-American Fulbright Commission. Stiliana Ivanova of Kinstellar International was a special guest at the tournament’s closing ceremony on Sunday and spoke to students about the importance of education in a changing world.

BEST is grateful to Tsvetelina Vaskova-Totten for her assistance with tournament logistics, the director of Zahariy Stoyanov Mrs. Efrosina Kisyova for being a gracious host, and the numerous Student Ambassadors for their hard work and dedication throughout the weekend. BEST would also like to extend our gratitude to the US Embassy and Kinstellar International for their support of our fall tournaments and for making our programming possible for the students of Bulgaria.

BEST Regional Tournament at Yordan Yovkov Primary School, Pleven – November 18-19, 2017

On 18 and 19 November, the BEST Foundation hosted its first tournament of the 2017-2018 season in Pleven. 271 high school students attended the English-language speech and debate event at Yordan Yovkov Primary School. This was the first BEST tournament hosted by both the school and the city of Pleven. Twenty-two teams from seventeen Bulgarian cities attended the tournament, including three first-time teams from Gotse Delchev, Blagoevgrad, Petrich, and Zlatitsa. Students competed in five events: Original Oratory, Duo Interpretation, Prose Interpretation, Poetry Interpretation, and World Schools Debate.

The Saturday morning opening ceremony was attended by special guest Martin Krastev, a representative of Camp Golden Gate, who spoke to students about the opportunities available at the American-style summer camp on the Black Sea. On Sunday afternoon, the event concluded with a closing ceremony attended by several honored guests, including Ivan Dimov of the Single Step Foundation, Angela Rodel and Iliana Dimitrova of the Bulgarian-American Fulbright Commission, U.S. Embassy Cultural Affairs Officer Matthew Hagengruber, and the mayor of Pleven, Mr. Georg Spartanski.

The BEST Foundation will host three additional tournaments during this school year. The next regional tournament will take place in Sliven on 9 and 10 December, targeting schools in eastern Bulgaria. Another two regional tournaments will be held in Sofia (17-18 February) and Dobrich (10-11 March) as well as the National Tournament in Plovdiv (28-29 April).
